(Movie) Empire of Light

 

                                                       I watched this at my local Regal theater.

   This movie was surreal. The movie primarily takes place in a theater on the south coast of England during the 1980s. I do want you that this is a touchy-feely kind of movie so it may not be for everyone. With that said, I love this movie. It focuses on any unconventional relationship between a middle-aged woman named holly and her new and much younger hire at the theater, Stephen. Holly lives a rather drab life till she meets Stephen and eventually falls in love. The rest I will leave for you to experience. 

A movie is meant to be immersive, if you can forget that you are watching a movie then you are truly immersed. Empire of Light delivers on being immersive by removing distractions and by not wasting a shot or scene. Each character is vital to the story, and each is relatable in their own way making you feel for each one as they appear. 

Olivia Coleman and Micheal Ward deliver on the most passionate relationship committed to film in 2022. Taking an unconventional relationship and making you believe the love is pure and absolute is not easy. If these actors do not receive Oscar nods, then the academy has failed them.
