Acceptance

"Accept the things you cannot change.
Have the courage to change the things you can...
And have the wisdom to know the difference."

- Nora Allen (Barry Allen's (The Flash)mother)

Yes, I took inspiration from a fictional comic book character's mother, but is this not a good quote?      I know the quote has a different origin, but quoting Barry Allen’s mom is more fun. Acceptance is a virtue, like patience. To accept a situation, likely one you can not change, is vital to your own success and general well-being. When you don't want to hear something or when luck doesn't go your way, being able to accept it, and make the best of it, allows you the space needed to grow.

Accepting the things around you as being exactly what they are and nothing more will keep your grounded in the present. I recently learned there is a practice in meditation called grounding, this can help you accept things the way they are. In order to ground yourself try to label your surroundings as what they are, like recognizing your desk and acknowledging what material it is made of and the color of it. Grounding can also be applied when you are driving, like recognizing the color or brand of car in front of you. Grounding can help ease troubling thoughts because you are becoming more in touch with where you are and  what you are doing in that moment.

Sometimes your thoughts may wander, and that is ok, as long as you can ground yourself in accepting what can be changed and what can not. Wisdom comes when grounding becomes second-nature.
