(Movie) Across The Universe
This movie, I have a bias toward this movie, because my family enjoys it. Especially my mother, grandmother, sisters and so on. I watched this from home, with my sister, for her birthday.
The last time I watched this movie was 6 years ago. Watching it again was interesting since I am now the same age or older than most of the characters. I would call it therapeutic.
Each character is fleshed out with smart writing and acting to hint at their strengths and weaknesses. These characters were real because each of them failed. Their failures are what defined them but they did not destroy them. Each of them came out on the other side a better person for their failures. Believe me, each character failed HARD. Heck, one of the characters literally gets back on the bus after their failure to move on. There is no point in dwelling on your shortcomings because they are temporary.
Now, to the singing. Of all the musicals I have seen in my life (yes, this movie is a musical) this is easily in my top five. There are other competitors like Mama-Mia and La La Land. But, the focus of this movie was to have very talented vocalists first and decent actors second. look out for a performance by Carol Woods for the most tear-jerking moment in this movie.
A little warning though. This is a artsy movie so, if that is not your thing then steer clear. Also this is a female directed movie which is a big plus (Julie Yaymor). The best way to sum up this movie is with a quote from Martin Luther McCoy, (he plays Jojo) "I welcome confrontation, I don't expect it to be easy".
This is a
GOOD MOVIE ALERT!
